Cabinet has endorsed the selection of the Nasrec Expo Centre, in Soweto, as the venue for the G20 Leaders Summit, which will be hosted in November.

Located alongside the iconic Soccer City stadium, which hosted the opening and closing games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the exhibition centre is also known for hosting large events, such as the biennial Electra Mining Africa expo and the Rand Show.

Cabinet spokesperson and Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made the announcement of its selection for the G20 Summit during a briefing on the May 28 Cabinet meeting.

She highlighted that, while it was built in 1984 to reinforce apartheid segregation, the democratic government continued to develop the precinct “as a bridge against apartheid spatial planning”.

“Therefore, the hosting of the G20, like many other events, in the Nasrec precinct continues to contribute to making Nasrec a symbol of spatial integration towards an equal South Africa,” Ntshavheni said.
